How to Store Coffee Beans Properly

If you’re a coffee lover, you likely keep lots of it on hand. But what are the best ways to store it? Nobody wants pests in their coffee beans or to brew coffee beans that have gone bad. Here are a few tips for storing your coffee beans so that you can preserve maximum freshness and flavor.

Store in an Airtight Container

Coffee might come in colorful and fun bags sometimes, but they are not ideal for storage. Exposure to air is bad for coffee beans because it makes them oxidize and thus go bad more quickly. In order to maintain the freshness of your beans, you should store them in opaque, airtight containers. Storing in an airtight container also protects your beans from getting chewed on by mice. This is especially important if you're storing in a place where mice could potentially get to it, like a cellar.

Buy Smaller Quantities

If you buy a jumbo-sized bag of coffee, you might have enough for a long time but you might not have time to brew it all before it loses its flavor. Buying smaller quantities of coffee at a time will not only require less space to store, but will help you go through your coffee more quickly. It will also stay fresher while you work your way through a smaller package. By the time you get to the bottom of a big bag, it will have lost some of its oomph. Also, if you are working your way through a small bag, you won't have to wait as long to try a new flavor.

Keep Them in a Cool Place

To preserve the freshness and flavor as long as possible, you should store your coffee beans in a cool place. You don’t need to put them in the freezer, but you do want to make sure that they aren’t in direct sunlight or next to any heat-producing appliances. After putting them in an opaque, airtight container, put them in a dark cupboard that is away from the oven and the microwave. This way, they will not absorb heat or sunlight—both of which can compromise the taste of coffee beans.

To keep your coffee tasting delicious and fresh, it’s important to follow these tips. Coffee is a drink you probably drink regularly, so it’s worth making sure you’re getting the most value out of the beans as you can. Though it might seem inconvenient at first to put effort into storing them properly, you’ll be glad you did in the long run.
